Occurrence:
The northern pike (Esox lucius, known simply as a pike in Britain,
Ireland, and the USA, or as jackfish in Canada)
It can be found throughout the northern hemisphere, in every
continent. In natural waters it can be caught in winter too.
The pike lives in lakes and the slow-flowing rivers. It prefers the
reeds, and it often hides in the seaweeds.
In the warmer weather the pike is wainting for it's prey, but when
the temperature cools down, it follows the prey to the deeper parts
of the lake.
Fishing: The pike hunts in winters aswell, so it can
be caught in frozen ponds too. If we notice the fish while hunting,
it's worth to change the
place of our bait to the closest reeds. They are really edacious and
most of the time they eat small fishes.
There are fishing limits on pikes. You have to throw back the fish
if:
You caught in between 15th of february - and 31st of March.
If it's too small. (minimum size 40 cms)
If you already caught 3 pikes that day.
bait: small fish
Description:
Their body is long, and energetic. Northern pikes are most often
olive green, shading from yellow to white along the belly.
The head is big compared to it's body.
